The Importance of Research Integrity in International Engagements

While Pitt encourages its faculty to pursue international engagements, faculty need to be aware that not all foreign countries ascribe to the same principles. The U.S. research enterprise is built on an open research environment that allows the free exchange of information and research results. However, this open environment must be balanced by processes that protect intellectual property and research results. The following research integrity principles are foundational to the U.S. research environment and should be followed in every international engagement:

  • Openness and Transparency
  • Accountability and Honesty
  • Impartiality and Objectivity
  • Respect
  • Freedom of Inquiry
  • Reciprocity
  • Merit based competition
