The University of Pittsburgh recognizes that Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS/Drones) are widely used by Pitt community members and visitors to Pitt’s campuses. University Policy RI 13 (Drones) provides a legal and operational framework for these individuals to fly drones within University owned or leased buildings (i.e., an indoor flight) and over University owned or managed property (i.e., an outdoor flight). Under Policy RI 13 (Drones), drone flyers must secure explicit written approval from the Office of Research Security & Trade Compliance (ORSTC) prior to conducting an indoor drone flight. Drone flyers are required to notify ORSTC of an outdoor drone flight prior to conducting University-directed outdoor drone flights only. All drone flights must be conducted safely and in compliance with all federal, state and University policies.
